How thoughts become things
NOTE: This
is an excerpt from the book The
Least You Should Know About Life.
As a starting point, consider that one of the major contributions of
science is that it has proven beyond any doubt that many visible effects
have an invisible cause. As an example, imagine that you suddenly have
bleeding sores appear all over your body. You try to treat them by putting
ointment on the sores themselves, thus dealing with the visible effect.
Yet the sores don’t go away, and you eventually go to the doctor.
Because she is a scientist, she knows that the visible sores are caused
by an invisible cause, namely an infection in your blood. By killing
the bacteria, you remove the cause and the effect goes away. Science
has revealed the following about cause and effect:
-
The many different forms
seen in the material universe are effects because they are created
from one invisible substance. All matter is made from molecules.
Molecules are made from atoms. Atoms are made from subatomic particles.
Subatomic particles can appear as either matter particles or energy
waves, meaning that they are made from pure energy. A recent theory
says that subatomic particles are made from very small strings that
vibrate, yet these strings reside in a different dimension, which
is what this book calls the spiritual realm.
- The process through which
this one basic substance takes on the appearance of different atoms,
molecules and visible forms is guided by certain laws of nature.
Science still
cannot describe exactly how energy becomes matter, but this is partly
– as explained earlier – caused by the fact that science
has ignored mind. As described, quantum physics has shown a clear link
between consciousness and subatomic particles. Some scientists are now
theorizing that the basic building block of the universe is not particles
or energy waves but information.

The central question is, “What makes vibrating energy take on
the form of solid matter particles and what makes these particles combine
into specific materials and forms in the visible universe?” As
an example, consider that everything is made from subatomic particles.
Yet what tells groups of these particles to combine into an oxygen and
a hydrogen atom? And what tells these atoms to combine into a water
molecule? What tells other particles to create other atoms that form
minerals? And what tells all the molecules to combine so they form an
entire planet with huge oceans? Since quantum physics has shown an undeniable
connection between matter and mind, the process whereby energy –
the stuff of mind – becomes matter cannot be an unconscious or
unintelligent process.
The most open-minded scientists have now begun to theorize that the
universe has its specific form because the basic substance out of which
it is made has taken on form based on information that was somehow applied
to it. The problem scientists have is that information can exist only
in a conscious mind. You might think that you have information stored
in a book or on your computer’s hard drive. Yet what is stored
in a book’s pages is simply black dots that are arranged in a
certain pattern. What is stored on your computer is an arrangement of
on/off signals in the form of the numbers 0 and 1. This is data but
it is not information. The data from a computer or the dots in a book
do not become information until someone reads it and interprets it.
Thus, only a conscious mind can turn meaningless data into information
that can be applied.

The point is that in order for the basic substance of the universe to
take on visible form, there must be a conscious mind that formulates
an image of a given form and then applies or transfers that information
to the substance which has no form but has the potential to take on
form. A materialistic scientist cannot explain the existence of such
a mind since the theory of evolution states that there were no self-conscious
minds until human beings appeared on planet Earth. Yet as described
in previous sections, this problem can be solved through a spiritual
world view.
What you need to add is that God or spiritual Beings are not the only
beings with the capacity of mind to impose information upon the Ma-ter
Light and cause it to take on specific forms. Your mind has the exact
same creative abilities as God because you were made in the image and
after the likeness of God. Thus, your outer situation, your physical
circumstances, is – at least in part – created by the images
you hold in the four levels of your mind. You are superimposing these
images upon the Ma-ter Light and the light will – eventually –
take on the physical forms that correspond to your mental images. If
you think life is a struggle, you will produce and attract circumstances
that make your life a struggle.

So far, you have imposed mental images upon the Ma-ter Light without
knowing what you were doing. You have done it without being aware of
how your mental images – your subconscious sense of identity,
thoughts and feelings and your conscious thoughts – have impacted
your life. Yet once you begin to understand that the visible circumstances
in your life are simply the effects of an invisible cause, you can begin
to take back control over your life.
By changing the images and beliefs in the four levels of your mind,
you can begin to change your outer circumstances. Instead of sitting
in front of the cosmic mirror and waiting for the mirror image to smile
at you, you can begin by taking command over the one thing you can immediately
control, namely your inner circumstances. When you experience an unpleasant
effect, you can avoid the self-defeating reaction, “Why did this
happen to me?” Instead, you can ask the self-empowering question,
“What mental image did I project into the cosmic mirror in order
to get this kind of a return?”
